mc-mac .........: new printer.  But if my most recent Mac/e-mail experience has been bad, the rest of my year has been better: no new Mac or iPod yet — maybe next year — but something just as nice.

In Apr ’98 I bought an HP LaserJet 6mp B&W laser printer for $799.  As of my Mar ’01 “Printers & Printing” presentation, I had spent a total of $115 in laser paper and toner in those 35 months, or an average of $3.30/month.

And in Jan ’00 I bought an Epson Stylus Photo 1200 wide-format color inkjet printer for $499, and as of Mar ’01, I had spent a total of $275 on inkjet paper and cartridges in those 14 months, or an average of $20/month.

Carrying those averages out 39 months to Jun ’04, I had spent another $130 on laser paper and toner, and another $780 in inkjet paper and cartridges.  (I have the exact numbers, but this review won’t go out now if I look them up.)

So I had this major printing project in June, and I didn’t really want to go through more inkjet cartridges, so I excitedly bought an HP Color LaserJet 3500 for $899, just $100 more than my B&W 6mp 6 years earlier.

Technically speaking, it’s a great printer.  It’s suppose to be fast at 12 pages per minute B&W or color, and it’s a one-pass printer, meaning paper goes by the drum only once, vs the CLJ 2500 which is 20 ppm black, but 4 ppm color.

While my real-world experience has been a little less exciting, in either Mac OS 9 or X — my issues are not w/ the printer itself, but w/ HP’s drivers — the end-result is better than either B&W-only laser or color inkjet output.

For some people whose e-mail addresses I don’t know, I will be printing up my Season’s greeting card and the webified version of this review and actually snail-mailing them out.

........ QMUG/LA.  I couldn’t write a year-in-review, mention Macs, and not mention QMUG/LA, the Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual Macintosh User’s Group for _all_ of Los Angeles, meeting since June 1994.

In June 2004, QMUG/LA celebrated its *10th* Anniversary, thus the major printing project mentioned earlier (of handouts, Certificates of Appreciation, envelopes for them, etc.).  It went well, and everyone was happy.

......... LACAAW.  Because of QMUG/LA’s 10th Anniversary meeting, a PC consultant found out that I knew a little bit about Macs and asked me to help him w/ a local non-profit and their Macs.

The Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women, LACAAW, has ~30 Macs, mostly iMacs and a few towers.  In my 1st three months there, I inventoried all of their desktops and created a FileMaker database of the results.

mu-music .......: Annie Lennox.  Some of you may know I was able to see Annie at UCLA’s Royce Hall on Tue, Apr 29th, 2003, which ended up being not one of my best concert experiences.

So when I found out in May ’04 I would have another chance to see her again, this time w/ Sting at the Hollywood Bowl in Sept 2004, I was a little less than anxious or excited.

Rather than try to be one of the first people to buy tickets like I did in 2003, I waited ’til just the week before and was able to buy two tickets for about the same price as 2003’s one.

So I was able to take a friend w/ me, and we had a blast!  Not only was getting to the Bowl and back a piece of cake w/ shuttles from Hollywood & Highland, but Annie just sounded fantastic, maybe due to better acoustics.

..... Eurythmics.  The buzz for Eurythmics fans on the Yahoo! Groups list is when their remastered albums w/ bonus tracks are coming out.  I just rec’d e-mail from Amazon that _maybe_ that will be Tue, Jan 11th, 2005.

........... Xmas.  Well, it’s Christmas time, so of course I have to listen to Xmas music.  As of this writing, I only have 72 songs for about 3 1/2 hours worth.  I’m still looking for ~7 more, but am open to others.

New to me this year are “Away in a Manger” by George Strait, “Go Tell It on the Mountain” by Nana Mouskouri, “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” by Tammy Wynette, and “The Holly and the Ivy” by Roger Whittaker.

I also highly recommend “Hang Myself from the Tree” by the Vandals, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Diana Krall, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” by Ryuichi Sakamoto, and “Sleigh Ride” by Ella Fitzgerald.
