 QMUG/LA logo Monthly E-mail Intros

Documents

Since April 2000, QMUG/LA has e-mailed out monthly meeting reminders w/ a section called “A Quick Note from the Editor!” — eighteen lines of additional information about that month’s presentation/topic or QMUG/LA in general.  Because these intros are unique to the e-mailed monthly meeting reminders and are only retrievable clumsily via google.com, they are archived here for posterity and easier access.

Networking

Hey!  Longtime QMUG/LA attendees have been asking, "Where's my monthly e-mail
reminder that I don't pay anything for?!"  And new attendees have been won-
dering, "I gave you my e-mail address -- where's my monthly mtng reminder??"
Well hopefully from this month's e-mailing on, both questions will be answer-
ed.  So what's been going on for the past five months?  Well, QMUG/LA was on
IMRU, received a Best User Group Website Award for Small User Group category,
and had a OneList Internet mailing list launched for it.  Check out all
three!  And what's coming up?  Well, this month's topic just oozes w/ info
about your Mac and networking, May's topic will amuse you and amaze you w/ a
presentation on your Mac and speech technology, and in just two short months,
QMUG/LA turns six and has its annual Anniversary Raffle!  The Raffle's a
great opportunity to do some Spring Cleaning, so consider contributing to
this exciting annual event.  And what else is happening?  Well, in the next
30 days you can enjoy the L.A. Rodeo, celebrate Earth Day, Dining Out for
Life, and Cinco de Mayo, enjoy the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, and maybe even
win $150 in Frontiers' Pride essay contest!  And who are we?  We're QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- Proud to be *your* MUG!

---------------------------------

Monday, May 8th, 7:30pm:

Speech Technology

"More notice!" is a request we periodically get about our monthly e-mail
reminders, despite the fact that each reminder lists towards the bottom of
its calendar section when the following month's mtng will be, in this case,
on Monday, June 12th.  "More notice!" despite the fact that our website of
three years now not only lists the next mtng, but, in our Qalendar section,
the next several mtngs, as well as every mtng QMUG/LA has had in its six
years.  What other organization, gay or non-gay, Mac or non-Mac, L.A. or
non-L.A., gives you this kind of history?  And finally, "More notice!" de-
spite the fact that QMUG/LA has been mtng the 2nd Monday of each month for
the past six years, so it's not rocket science to figure out when our next
mtng is, just look at your own calendar and see when the next 2nd Monday
will be.  So if this monthly e-mail reminder doesn't give you enough notice
about May's mtng, then please consider it one for June's mtng -- you'll be
missing an excellent presentation on Speech Technology, but maybe you'll be
able to catch an excellent History of Apple Computer, Inc., and maybe win
something in our *6th* Anniversary Raffle.  We're just your local QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

Monday, June 19th, 7:30pm:

A Brief History of Apple Computer, Inc., and

QMUG/LA's *6th* Anniversary

"It's astounding -- Time is fleeting -- Macness takes its toll.  But listen
closely, not for very much longer, I'll press command-option-control!  I
remember doing the time-warp, drinking those moments when... the darkness
would hit me, and a void would be calling... let's do the time-warp again,
Let's Do The Time-Warp Again, LET'S DO THE TIME-WARP AGAIN!" <hehehe>
Wow, this is so amazing that yet another year has gone by, and now QMUG/LA
is celebrating its *6th* Anniversary!  Join us as we feel nostalgic and
walk down memory lane to enjoy a brief history of Apple Computer, Inc., the
company who makes the computers we love to use, from its products and peo-
ple to its stock prices and commercials!  And join us as we indulge in the
highlights of QMUG/LA, from this past year to all *6* years!  We'll also
thank the people who've helped make this a fabulous year, and have yet
another of our legendary raffles!  Oh, and *everyone* walks away w/ a
Goodies Tube!  So join us!  And do the Time Warp, on Monday, June 19th.
You can also time warp to the Renaissance Pleasure Faire which runs 'til
Sunday, June 25th!  "It's just a jump to the left, and..."  We're QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

Monday, July 10th, 7:30pm:

Star Search 2000

So what topics are of interest to you enough for you to attend meetings on
them?  Some we're considering so far are...

3D Modeling & Animation II            Mac Basics
  Digital Cameras                       Mac Books
  Digital Video Editing                 Mac Games
    (iMovie, etc.)                      Mac OS X
Ethics & Responsibility               Preparing for Natural Disaster
(BSA, Napster, etc.)                Printers & Printing
  Hard Disk Utilities                   System Folder
(DiskWarrior, Norton, TechTool)       -- What the hell is this?
  Int'l Mac                             Video Conferencing
-- Learning a Foreign Language        (CU See Me, etc.)
Mac & Sound II                        Web Authoring III
-- Remix & DJ on your Mac

...and we're pretty sure these 16 topics will easily increase to 30!  So
help us set our calendar of meeting topics for 2000-2001!  We're QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

-------------------------------

Monday, August 14th, 7:30pm:

Mac Basics & the System Folder

So what topics are of interest to you enough for you to attend meetings on
them?  Well, we found out last month, and since then QMUG/LA's Coordina-
ting, Organizing, Recruiting and Retention Entity (the QORE) has been busy
coordinating, organizing, recruiting and retaining presenters to allow
those top 12 topics of interests to happen.  And we did it; we were suc-
cessful.  This was our third Star Search, and like the overwhelming success
of our first two, we let the people who actually attend our meetings set
the agenda, set the Qalendar for the next year, all the way to June 2001.
We think this is the most democratic process we could employ.  What other
gay or even non-gay group allows *you* to set its agenda or calendar?  Not
many, and not often.  We do it every year.  People who attend our August
meeting will be one of the first to find out exactly when those top 12 top-
ics will happen, and who will present them.  If you're unable to attend,
you can check our website the next day for this information.  Again, what
other group can tell you what they'll be doing every month through June
2001?  Not many.  But then, we're not like many groups.  We're QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

Monday, September 11th, 7:30pm:

3D Modeling & Animation II

So what topics are of interest to you enough for you to attend meetings on
them?  Well, we found out in July, and after much hard work, were proud to
unveil and announce our Qalendar of presentations through June 2001 last
month.  This information has also been available on our website since then,
but just to make sure you know, here it is in e-mail now.

Mon, Jul 10th "Star Search 2000"
  Mon, Aug 14th "Mac Basics"
            and "the System Folder"
Mon, Sep 11th "3D Modeling & Animation II"
(October's meeting will be at Dr. Rawstock, 6150 Santa Monica Blvd).
Mon, Oct  9th "Digital Video Editing"
Mon, Nov 13th "Hard Disk Utilities"
Mon, Dec 11th "Mac OS X"

(January's meeting will be on the 3rd Monday of the month.)
  Mon, Jan 15th "Macworld Expo/SF 2001 Review"
            and "Web Authoring III"
  Mon, Feb 12th "Digital Cameras"
Mon, Mar 12th "Printers & Printing"
Mon, Apr  9th "Conflicts, Errors & Crashes"
Mon, May 14th "Macs & PCs"
Mon, Jun 11th "Tips & Tricks"
            and "QMUG/LA's *7th* Anniversary"

What an exciting year!  You selected the topics; we set the order.  Again,
all meetings take place on the 2nd Monday of each month (except January's),
7:30pm at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center (except October's).  We're QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

-------------------------------

Monday, October 9th, 7:30pm:

Digital Video Editing

So why is this month's meeting not at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center?  Well,
we certainly could have presented this month's topic there -- the Center
has been our meeting place for every one of our monthly meetings since we
began over six years ago, and will continue to be our primary meeting place
for years to come hopefully -- but sometimes a change of scenery is good.
One of our longtime members has worked for Dr. Rawstock for years, which
just recently moved to a new building, a beautiful facility w/ ample park-
ing that's also very secure, and its new Digital Division's primary goal is
to provide L.A. w/ a new place to edit its digital video.  Dr. Rawstock has
editing bays and equipment (like cameras and G4s) you can rent, and classes
you can take (like iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, After Effects, Media
Cleaner Pro, GoLive, etc.), and hosts many Apple DV seminars as well as the
Final Cut Pro Users Group meetings.  So QMUG/LA is very excited to be able
to have one of our meetings here so our members can see this place first-
hand and so you can benefit from it by renting some bays or equipment or
by taking some classes.  We're keeping our eye out for you.  We're QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

Monday, December 11th, 7:30pm:

Mac OS X

So, December Greetings!  At no other time than this time is this time the
best time to be a member of a user group, specifically QMUG/LA.  At this
time, members of QMUG/LA (those who have attended our meetings) and those who
know about QMUG/LA can save on up to four different offers:  save $15 or more
on Alsoft DiskWarrior and other Alsoft products;  save $15 on "the Digital
Universe," revolutionary astronomy simulation software;  save way more than
$15 at the Apple MUG Store;  and save $10-$25 on Macworld Expo/SF exhibits
pre-registration or 15% on conference pre-registration!  It's Christmas time,
so treat yourself and some Mac user you love.  A couple of these offers are
for a limited time:  the Alsoft offer ends Friday, December 15th, 2000;  and
the Macworld offer ends Monday, December 11th, 2000.  And, yes, it's Macworld
time:  time to go to San Francisco, time to pilgrimage to the Castro, and
time to shop at the Company Store in Cupertino.  Because this Macworld takes
place the second week of January, the next time QMUG/LA meets will not be on
its usual second Monday, but will be instead on the third Monday of that
month -- Monday, January 15th, 2001.  It's QMUG/LA time, and we're QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

-------------------------------

Monday, January 15th, 7:30pm:

Web Authoring III

So, Happy New Year!  Time to make some resolutions, and we have a few sugges-
tions:  back up your HD regularly, pay your shareware fees, and attend your
monthly QMUG/LA meetings!  Macworld Expo/SF 2001 happens next week, and be-
cause of that, QMUG/LA will not, but instead will meet the 3rd Monday of this
month -- Monday, January 15th.  Also, because that Monday is Martin Luther
King day, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center will not be open, so QMUG/LA will
meet at Dr. Rawstock, at 6150 Santa Monica Blvd, just a few blocks east of
the Center.  Dr. Rawstock has ample parking that's also very secure.  Once
inside, we'll enjoy a "Macworld Expo/SF 2001 Review" -- from the keynote and
exhibits floor to the cool new hardware and software announcements, we'll
give you the inside info on what happened! -- and "Web Authoring III" -- from
Dreamweaver and Flash and GoLive to how to deal w/ clients, manage projects,
and generate revenue, we'll give you tips and tricks on the nuts and bolts
and the ins and outs!  Then join us Monday, February 12th, back at the L.A.
Gay & Lesbian Center for "Digital Cameras," everything you ever wanted and
needed to know before and after you buy.  Kick off your year with QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

Monday, Febuary 12th, 7:30pm:

Digital Cameras

So, flashback five years to Feb '96 when QMUG/LA first presented digital
cameras, Apple's QuickTake digital camera -- hard to believe it's been five
years already -- and now five years later, we're presenting the topic again!
<http://qmug.org/LA/qd-qalendar/matrix.html>  Digital cameras and the tech-
nology behind them have changed a lot in five years, and we'll show you
everything you need to know, before and after you buy -- from becoming buzz-
word compliant (what's a megapixel?), thru getting an overview of what cam-
eras are available and about how much they cost, to finding out about all
your accessory options like lenses, batteries, flash memory cards, and digi-
tal picture frames, etc.  Next month we'll focus on printers & printing --
from the three basic kinds and how to print w/o a printer, thru switching
between printers and paying attention to Page Setup, to unorthodox use of
your apps to create/layout all the different things you can print -- CD la-
bels and inserts, business cards and envelopes, your own mugs and t-shirts,
and more.  Gosh darn, this is all more fun than you can shake a stick at!
<hehehe>  So you just won't want to miss out on all the fun here at QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

Conflicts, Errors & Crashes

So, why does qmug.org have a community calendar?  And is there a limit as to
how many items get listed?  QMUG/LA is the unique union of the gay communi-
ty, Mac community, and L.A. community, communities that have a multitude of
wonderful events happening at any given time.  qmug.org of course wants you
to attend QMUG/LA's next meeting by telling you when it is and what its top-
ic will be, but qmug.org doesn't want to be so insular and singular as to
only tell you this and nothing about the other great events that we know
about that might be of interest to you.  When qmug.org started almost four
years ago, it's community calendar was about half a page, and that has now
grown to a page and a half.  This month, if we listed every item we wanted
to let you know about, that listing would have been over two and half pages!
Not only did we not want to print up this extra page for our meeting's hand-
out, but you probably wouldn't want to scroll through them.  So this month,
19 new items (of 26) appear in place of others we've told you about before.
qmug.org's community calendar is not exhaustive or all-encompassing, but
it's a pretty good cross-section of what's going on.  That's us, QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

-------------------------------

Monday, May 14th, 7:30pm:

Macs & PCs

So, in 1984, when DOS was the lay of the land, Macintosh was a breath of
fresh air.  And though Windows 1.0 shipped in Nov '85 and was upgraded
every few years, not 'til Windows 3.1 in '92 did it reach critical mass.
Perhaps more interesting than the differences in these two operating sys-
tems is the disdain their users feel towards each other: "My computer/op-
erating system is better than your computer/operating system."  When Steve
Jobs returned to Apple and delivered the keynote at Macworld Expo/Boston
'97, he dropped the bomb and asked, "Why can't we all just get along?"  Ac-
cepting from Microsoft $150 million and a five year commitment to the Mac-
intosh for Office, he began Apple's return to greatness.  Now, Mac users
are probably less hostile towards Windows and its users, and vice versa.
~27% of QMUG/LA's members/attendees use Windows, UNIX or some other operat-
ing system every week, and last year's Star Search meeting brought the top-
ic of Macs and PCs to our Top 10 list (out of 30 topics).  So come to what
should be an interesting presentation and discussion on their differences
and similarities, and maybe why people feel the way they do, at QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- one of only two gay Mac user groups in the world.

Monday, July 9th, 7:30pm:

Star Search 2001

So, we've said the following before, but it bears repeating:  we think
we're incredibly fortunate to be lesbian, gay and bisexual Mac users living
here in Los Angeles because there are *so* many activities and events hap-
pening all around us all the time.  Every month has a major, special event:
Jan has the Pasadena Rose Bowl Parade;  Feb has West Hollywood's Mardi
Gras;  Mar has Spring Internet World;  Apr has the L.A. Gay Rodeo;  May has
Cinco de Mayo;  Jun has the L.A. Gay Pride Parade;  Jul has the OutFest Gay
Film Festival;  Aug has the Sunset Junction Street Fair;  Sep has AIDSWalk
L.A.;  Oct has Halloween;  Nov has the Pasadena Doo Dah Parade;  and Dec
has rest and relaxation to prepare for Jan's Macworld Expo/SF!  And for the
past seven years, every month has had a QMUG/LA general meeting to encour-
age you to enjoy these upcoming events.  QMUG/LA is poised to begin an
eighth year, and we're excited about the possibilities.  We want *you* to
be excited about the possibilities, too, and we want to encourage you to
take an active interest in helping QMUG/LA happen and continue.  So show up
and find out what can happen to ensure QMUG/LA continues.  We're QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- the only active gay Mac user group in the world.

Monday, November 12th, 7:30pm:

Upgrading Your Mac

So, omigosh, we've been so incredibly busy that we've been absolutely ter-
rible about communicating to you what we've been so incredibly busy doing!
<hehehe>  We have the incredible fortune and pleasure of benefiting from
some important changes:

(1) NEW FEMALE OFFICERS.  At our July "Star Search 2001" meeting, two won-
derful women volunteered to help out, one who will be our new Female Co-
chair and help facilitate monthly meetings, as well as represent QMUG/LA at
Macworld Expo/SF 2002 and to local lesbian organizations and publications.

The other will be our new Membership Chair and will help update our mem-
bership database of the over 200 of you and ensure our contact information
for you is up-to-date, as well as eventually send out these monthly meeting
reminders in a more timely fashion than this one.  <hehehe>
<http://qmug.org/LA/qi-qore/*present.html>

(2) NEW MEETING TOPICS.  As we have done at our previous three annual "Star
Search" meetings, those in attendance voted for what topics they wanted
presented, and from that we've been able to set our Qalendar of topics and
presenters through June 2002.  That alone I think makes us pretty special.

  They are:  AUG, Job Hunting;  SEP, 3D Modeling;  OCT, Marketing Yourself;
NOV, Upgrading Your Mac;  DEC, Mac OS X;  JAN, Web Authoring;  FEB, Video
Conferencing;  MAR, Printers & Printing;  APR, Conflicts, Errors & Crashes;
MAY, Tips & Tricks;  and JUN, Shareware & Freeware and *8th* Anniversary.

(3) NEW MEETING LOCATION.  Our meeting time remains the same, but also at
our July meeting, those in attendance voted for where they wanted our meet-
ing place to be, and that was at Dr. Rawstock, 6150 Santa Monica Blvd, on
the south side of Santa Monica Blvd between Vine and Gower.

Dr. Rawstock is behind a tall black gate, so parking is secure but not
necessarily conducive to late arrivals, so get there early, or at least on
time!  Inside is a lovely facility w/ great overhead projectors, plenty of
seating and a fast Internet connection.

(4) NEW LOGO CONTEST.  Lastly, now that Mac OS X is upon us, we're looking
at our current logo and wondering if we can Aquafy it, or maybe try some-
thing totally different.  What do *you* think?  All you creative types,
pull out your Freehands and Illustrators and show us what you can do!

So, that's what's new for now -- new female officers, new meeting topics,
new meeting place, and new logo contest -- so check us out at this month's
"Upgrading Your Mac" or at next month's "Mac OS X (10.1)."  We're QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles

Monday, December 10th, 7:30pm:

Mac OS X

So, the holidays are upon us -- Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's -- and
we hope you're holding up, juggling company, parties, shopping, etc.  Mac
OS X is also upon us -- more responsive, repositionable Dock, auto-PPP/DHCP
detection, etc. -- and we hope you're enjoying it as much as we are.  And
applications for Mac OS X are upon us -- ViaVoice, Office, Virtual PC --
and they just keep coming!  Here at QMUG/LA, we're happy to offer you new
documents like last month's "Web Programmer position" announcement and
"Upgrading Your Mac" outline and this month's Intego "NetBarrier" and
"VirusBarrier" offer and our updated "Top 10 Mac OS X Links."  And check
out our "Holiday Gift Guide" for that special Mac user in your life (or
maybe just for yourself)!  Even the L.A. Palm/Portable/PowerBook User Group
resumes meetings this month, now in Marina del Rey!  And next year kicks
off w/ a bang w/ Showtime's "Queer as Folk" starting its second season, and
Steve Jobs delivering his Macworld Expo/SF 2002 Keynote.  So throughout all
this, here's a wish to you and yours for peace and prosperity during this
holiday season and on into the new year from all of us here at QMUG/LA,
the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Macintosh User's Group for all of Los Angeles
<http://qmug.org> -- the only active gay Mac user group in the world!
