At our next meeting on Monday, August 11th, 1997,
7:30pm
QMUG/LA presents
Scanner Night!
at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, 1625 N Schrader
just east of Highland Ave and south of Hollywood Blvd.
QMUG/LA's First Annual Scanner Night is *your* opportunity
to bring to our meeting a floppy disk and most anything you want scanned
that will fit on a flatbed scanner, and for $1 per scan to benefit the
Center, get it scanned, for you to do any of the below with it. We can
scan it into practically any format, so even PC users are welcome.

> What is a scanner?
A scanner is an input device that takes a printed image and,
by use of light, converts it into a digital image. Generally speaking,
there are three kinds of scanners: Feed, Flatbed, and Slide -- like Visioneer's
Paperport (feed), Apple's Color OneScanner (flatbed), and Nikon's Super
CoolScan (slide), respectively -- ranging in price from $200 to $2,000.
Two popular add-ons to flatbed scanners are transparency adapters
and document feeders so you can scan transparencies and multiple documents,
another $200 to $600. Most scanners are bundled with all the cables, and
driver, image and OCR software -- like Photoshop or ColorIt (image) and
OmniPage or TextBridge (OCR) -- you need to get up and running.
> What can I do with a scanner?
Perhaps a better question is, "What can I do with what
I scan?" Because the Macintosh in particular is so graphic in its
user interface, you can place your scans practically anywhere, from StartupScreens,
to desktop pictures or patterns, to puzzle pictures, to icons, to screensaver
modules, to the "About the Finder" window, to ShutdownScreens,
and so much more!
You can of course also put your scan on your stationery, resumes,
calling cards, fax cover sheets, family tree or organizational charts,
meeting agendas, brochures, newsletters, reports, Persuasion or PowerPoint
presentations, web pages, missing pet signs, for sale signs, t-shirt transparency
paper (if you have a printer to support that), and so much more!
So you see, you *don't* want to miss this meeting!
